What does the executive board of OSAKO do? Part 1: Chairperson and Vice-chairperson

Could you be a part of executive board of your student union – as a student, for students? You can now apply to executive board of OSAKO for the year 2021.

In the “What does the executive board of OSAKO do?” blog series current actives of the board shed a light on what they actually do on the board and how they feel about it. So, if you are wondering what kind of responsibilities they have on the board, this is the blog for you! First, we have the current chairperson and vice-chairperson sharing their thoughts.

One of the most important responsibilities of the chairperson of executive board is to be the leader of executive board. Annually written action plan guides you through the year, and it’s chairperson’s and vice-chairperson’s task to see that the plan follows through. Chairperson should be well-informed about what is going on in each area of responsibility of the board. Ultimately, the chairperson makes sure that the executive board is doing its job.

Like other board members, also chairperson attends various working groups, where he brings views and opinions of students. Chairperson also keeps in touch with Oamk, student union OYY, other student unions and other stakeholders.

Chairperson invites the board members to the meeting of executive board and chairs the meetings. They work closely with the chair of the board of representatives and brings updates of the executive board to meetings of board of representatives. In the meetings they also answer the questions of representatives about the executive board and its actions together with the rest of the board members.

During this year some of the most important successes have been organizing events with special arrangements, creating a new strategy and maintaining an active operation throughout the year. Even though there weren’t that many events or travelling, I made a lot of new friends and contacts from all over Finland. Naturally I became close with my own board as well.

I gained a lot of confidence and trust in my own actions during this year. I also realized how important it is to take care of your own well-being. Also, peer-support become more important than ever. It was wonderful to see how the students in universities of applied sciences supported each other through this difficult time. I always received help when I asked, and I hope I was able to offer it as well.

The role of the vice-chairperson is to act as the acting chairperson when they are prevented from performing their duties. In this case the vice-chair may convene a meeting of the Board and chair the meeting. In addition, the vice-chair assists the chairperson of the Board, as well as other members of the board in their duties when needed.

My own responsibilities this year have included the development of education, as well the matters of the Kontinkangas and Oulainen campuses. I’ve been attending the working groups and meetings that have fitted in in my areas of responsibility or that I have otherwise found interesting. I’ve also got to work with student organizations and student union OYY.

Operations of OSAKO are roughly divided to core process teams: Development of education and Promoting the wellbeing of students. Chairperson and vice-chairperson divide the responsibility to manage these areas. Every year they agree on which one takes responsibility of which area. This year I’ve been in charge of the development of education, which includes education policy and tutoring. In another words I’ve ultimately been in charge to make sure these areas are functioning as they should.

My best memory of this term has been the participation in the Autumn Start -event organized by the Association of Finnish Student Unions, SAMOK, where I got to meet members of other student unions for the first time. With interesting trainings included, I can really say that this event is one of the best highlights of my year.
